Beginning with
the master plan design for Baghdad International Airport in the early 1970s; Tasso
Katselas Associates, Inc. has been involved in airport design for over a quarter of a
century. After completing several support facilities and interim expansions to Greater
Pittsburgh International Airport in the 1970s and 1980s, the firms
involvement in the airport continued with the design and construction of the new Midfield
Terminal facility that opened in 1992. TKA has provided design services to the Port
Authority of New York and New Jersey for counters and back wall design at Newark
International Airport. In 1997 and 1998 the firm led the design review effort for the new
Inchon International Airport near Seoul, South Korea. |
Pittsburgh International Airport
The new Midfield Terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport opened in October, 1992 and
was immediately hailed as one of the best, if not the best, airports in the country. The
facility consistently ranks at or near the top in airport passenger surveys. The 100 gate
facility includes three terminal buildings; an underground transit system; and a parking
garage. The final project encompasses approximately 2 million square feet of building
surrounded by 1.1 million square yards of apron and taxiway concrete. The entire project,
which sits on a 900-acre site; was designed, constructed, and outfitted for a total cost
of approximately $800 million. TKAs involvement as Principal Architect and General
Consultant on this 800 million-dollar project was unprecedented in scope. In addition to
designing every structure and facility on the project, the firm also coordinated and
supervised the work of over sixty consultants. The airport opened on time and under budget
and has served as a model for other facilities under development. Techniques and design
concepts developed by the TKA team are being emulated around the world, from Austin to
Hong Kong. |
